Grand Lake, Colorado is undeniably one of the best Fall destinations for leaf peepers. Aspen Trees turn a brilliant gold, with some orange and red trees interspersed. The trees are startling, amidst the evergreen Lodgepole Pine Forest and against the incredible blue of our three major lakes (Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Reservoir and Lake Granby). Take a Fall road trip!
A drive over Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is a must. The road is the highest continuous highway in the United States and offers breathtaking views and scenery. One harem is regularly seen at the Grand Lake Entrance so you don’t have to go far.

We look forward to serving you.
Are you wondering about how the East Troublesome fire has affected Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park? This article is full of information.
Firstly, the Historic Rapids Lodge and Restaurant was not affected by fire or smoke damage. We are forever grateful for the work that the firefighters did in protecting our lovely town as well. Shops, restaurants and all the summer activities are up and running as usual.
Certainly when one looks at the surrounding scenery, evidence of the fire is visible especially to the North (into Rocky Mountain National Park) and to the West (Arapaho National Forest). In touring the surrounding developed areas, you will see new homes rising from the ashes and some that are still in a awaiting clean up. Our Grand County Community has banded together and rebuilding is well underway. Our hearts go out to all those who were affected by the fire, especially those that lost homes and so much family history with them.
Snowmobile trails were open on a limited basis this winter after locals worked hard to make them safe. It is anticipated that they will be fully open next Winter. The views from the newly cleared hills in the Arapaho National Forest were astounding.
On entering Rocky Mountain National Park, you will see one of the three buildings at the Grand Lake Entrance station was lost to the fire. The old vegetation build-up in the meadows was burned and recycled into the soil nourishing the newly sprouted, fresh green grass which is attracting herds of Elk and Moose. Wildlife viewing in these areas is exceptional. Traveling into the park offers insight into the power and ferociousness of the fire. Previously hidden mountain rock outcroppings and other topographical features are now in view. The extraordinary winds left trees in some areas are bent over in an arc or snapped in half. Many of the employee housing units opposite Green Mountain Trailhead were lost.
Approximately half way down the Kawuneechee Valley, the signs of fire dissipate. Trail Ridge Road is set to open for Memorial Day Weekend and it will be interesting to see any evidence of the fire in the tundra when the snow melts off. For Trail Ridge Road Status and Conditions call 970-586-1222. Some trails remain closed on the West Side but many are open and ready for you to enjoy.
In a nutshell, come visit. The Grand Lake Community appreciates your support and is looking forward to a summer of healing and recovery.
