THE HISTORIC RAPIDS

Located just off the main street (Grand Ave.) in Grand Lake, Colorado our lodging and restaurant facilities are perfect for a romantic getaway, family vacation or a memorable mountain retreat. We are “the Grand Lake Experience”! Our property is tucked along the banks of the Tonahutu River, at the North Inlet of Grand Lake, Colorado, the headwaters of the Colorado River. In addition, we have Pet Friendly Cabins and Cottages available.

BRIEF HISTORY

A little of our fascinating history – The Rapids Lodge was built in 1915 as an inn and restaurant, and has been preserved as an historical hotel and is an icon in our town. The unique lodge pole pine structure was the first building in Grand Lake, Colorado to have electricity and running water. We have had a variety of famous and infamous guests stay with us including Jim Croce, Janis Joplin and Kris Christofferson.

In the 1950′s gambling was illegal, but you could find some action at the Rapids! There was even a secret bell that was rung when authorities pulled into the driveway, allowing everyone to “turn the tables” and hide the evidence!

THE RESTAURANT

The Historic Lodge and Restaurant building is typical of the early 1900’s “Barky” or Adirondack style of architecture sporting an austere façade and boxy look. However, upon entering the main lobby, guests are continually amazed at the cozy feel which showcases an original stone fireplace and an early, curved glass showcase from the original Granby Drug Store. The mantelpiece decorations change seasonally and are always a delight to returning patrons. Stained glass, collectible plates and antiques are part of the unique décor. The Grand Lake restaurant is open for dinner and features steaks, seafood and wild game. With views of the river and a vintage stage-stop fireplace, the dining room provides a great atmosphere to enjoy fine dining in a casual mountain environment. Lunch is served outside by the river during the summer.
