THE HISTORIC RAPIDS
The historic Rapids Lodge is located in Grand Lake, Colorado, just off the main street (Grand Avenue). We are right along the banks of the Tonahutu River, at the North Inlet of Grand Lake, Colorado, and the headwaters of the Colorado River. We’re also right on the western edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, and we’re always happy to host park travelers. Our gourmet restaurant serves up delicious mountain dining, and our unique lodging facilities are perfect for all sorts of guests, from family vacations to romantic getaways to mountain adventures too. We even have pet-friendly lodging! Indeed, the Rapids Lodge provides the authentic “Grand Lake Experience!”
The Rapids Lodge was built in 1915, making our lodge nearly a century old. The lodge is built from local lodge pole pine, and was the first building in Grand Lake, Colorado to have running water and electricity. The building originally opened as an inn and restaurant, and has been preserved over the years as a historical hotel and a local Grand Lake icon. Our long list of famous (and infamous) guests includes Janis Joplin, Jim Croce, and Kris Kristofferson.
Though gambling was illegal in the 1950s, there was some action to be had at Rapids! The lodge even had a secret bell to ring to when authorities pulled into the driveway, alerting guests and allowing them to “turn the tables” and hide the evidence of gambling!

The Historic Lodge and Restaurant building is typical of the early 1900’s “Barky” or Adirondack style of architecture sporting an austere façade and boxy look. However, upon entering the main lobby, guests are continually amazed at the cozy feel which showcases an original stone fireplace and an early, curved glass showcase from the original Granby Drug Store. The mantelpiece decorations change seasonally and are always a delight to returning patrons. Stained glass, collectible plates and antiques are part of the unique décor. The Grand Lake restaurant is open for lunch (in the summer) and dinner and features signature sandwiches, homemade soups, steaks, seafood and wild game. Please call for hours (970) 627-3707. With views of the river and a vintage stage-stop fireplace, the dining room provides a great atmosphere to enjoy fine dining in a casual mountain environment. Lunch and Dinner are served outside by the river during the summer.
