Grand Lake Events – 2015

Mark your calendar because a new Grand Lake event is coming in late August!

The “Spirit Lake Blues Festival at Grand Lake” will be held on Saturday August 22 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ana Popovic, Jimmy Hall with My Blue Sky, Austin Young with Michaela Rae, John Weeks Band, The Symbols, and Cary Morin will all be performing. The concert’s VIP tickets will go on sale June 20th. General Admission tickets will go on sale July 1 through the Grand County Blues Society website.

Grand lake eventsGrand Lake, Colorado’s largest natural lake, is the perfect venue for this event. The concert will be lakeside, offering fantastic scenery in all directions. Savor BBQ and refreshments during the show.

Located just two half-blocks from where the Blues Festival is being held, The Rapids Lodge is the perfect location for your weekend base! When you’re not enjoying the music, Grand Lake and the surrounding areas will offer a wide variety of activities to keep you busy for the rest of the time. Consider a boat ride on the lake in the morning when the water is peaceful and reflective, followed by a riverside lunch at the Rapids Restaurant, some great shopping in town and then a nap on the beach before the show!

Rocky Mountain National Park is our backyard and offers fantastic scenery, hiking, horse riding, quiet moments, bird, and wildlife watching. The Rapids Lodge and Rocky Mountain National Park celebrate their Centennial this year and a drive over Trail Ridge Road (the highest “highway” in the country) will be unforgettable.

The little things in Grand Lake Colorado ….

The Rocky Mountain National Park (100 years old this year) is a great place to learn about life on the Continental Divide. The Rapids Lodge (also 100 years old this year) is just 5 minutes from the West Entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. We are located just below the North Inlet Trail access in Grand Lake Colorado. Our stunning location along the banks of the Tonahutu River offer great opportunities for Moose and American Dipper viewing. On occasion an Otter or Mink might clamber along the river’s edge and Red Foxes often traverse the property.Grand Lake Colorado

The Rocky Mountain Conservancy is providing several educational day excursions on the West side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Contact them at 970-586-3262 to reserve  your spot.

Starting out on June 13, 2015 is a “Birding in Rocky Mountain National Park” all day excursion. Start indoors and then head out into the field within Rocky Mountain National Park. Identify birds by sight and voice and learn about their natural history. Look for woodpeckers, bluebirds, swallows and wrens at their cavity nests.Grand Lake Colorado

On July 11, 2015 look for common and not-so-common “Rocky Mountain Wildflowers” and the park’s diversity. Did you know the West slope has more plant diversity than the East side of the park? A naturalist will answer your questions.

Grand Lake ColoradoAugust 15th, 2015 brings a chance to learn about the “Butterflies of Rocky Mountain National Park”. Learn about diversity and behavior. You might see Rocky Mountain Parnassian, Scudder’s Sulphur, Silver-Bordered Fritillary, Mourning Cloak and Dark Wood-Nymph. Bring binoculars and cameras.  The instructor will have a net and release permit so a close look can be enjoyed.

The final excursion will cover the “River Otters of Rocky Mountain National Park” on September 12, 2015. River Otters live in the Colorado River and were re-introduced beginning in the 1970’s having been absent from the landscape since the early 1900’s. The region now shows a healthy reproductive population at carrying capacity. This course will be enjoyed at the Trail River Ranch in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Book your room at the Rapids Lodge today and plan a scrumptious dinner overlooking the river after a long day of exploration.

The Travel Channel films “Hotel Impossible” in Grand Lake, Colorado

“Hotel Impossible” host Anthony Melchiorri and designer Blanche Garcia stayed at the Historic Rapids Lodge and Restaurant for 6 days at the end of January and into early February with their film crew.

The exciting episode of “Hotel Impossible” was filmed at the Western Riviera in Grand Lake and will be screened in mid-March so keep an eye on the Travel Channel schedule.

Anthony raved about Grand Lake’s amazing beauty and all the activities that we have to offer. He enjoyed snowmobiling and ice-fishing during his stay. The crew had so much fun enjoying our famous Winter Carnival whose theme this year was “Alice in Winterland”.

Winter is the time to come visit, Anthony says. In the summer there are a lot of beautiful places, but winter in Grand Lake is unique. Anthony had nothing but good things to say about his experience at the Rapids too.

So come see what Anthony is talking about and stay at the Rapids Lodge at the West Entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park!

Winter Carnival and Lodging at Rapids Lodge

A recent Trip Advisor Review:
“Wood Do It Again” , Reviewed September 13, 2011
Stayed in one of the smaller rooms which was very nice. Loved the quiet location right next to the mountain stream and enjoyed the one block walk ‘into town.’ Tom and his wife were very accommodating, and so was Carol. Would definitely like to come back. Madison, WI
