The little things in Grand Lake Colorado ….

The Rocky Mountain National Park (100 years old this year) is a great place to learn about life on the Continental Divide. The Rapids Lodge (also 100 years old this year) is just 5 minutes from the West Entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. We are located just below the North Inlet Trail access in Grand Lake Colorado. Our stunning location along the banks of the Tonahutu River offer great opportunities for Moose and American Dipper viewing. On occasion an Otter or Mink might clamber along the river’s edge and Red Foxes often traverse the property.Grand Lake Colorado

The Rocky Mountain Conservancy is providing several educational day excursions on the West side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Contact them at 970-586-3262 to reserve  your spot.

Starting out on June 13, 2015 is a “Birding in Rocky Mountain National Park” all day excursion. Start indoors and then head out into the field within Rocky Mountain National Park. Identify birds by sight and voice and learn about their natural history. Look for woodpeckers, bluebirds, swallows and wrens at their cavity nests.Grand Lake Colorado

On July 11, 2015 look for common and not-so-common “Rocky Mountain Wildflowers” and the park’s diversity. Did you know the West slope has more plant diversity than the East side of the park? A naturalist will answer your questions.

Grand Lake ColoradoAugust 15th, 2015 brings a chance to learn about the “Butterflies of Rocky Mountain National Park”. Learn about diversity and behavior. You might see Rocky Mountain Parnassian, Scudder’s Sulphur, Silver-Bordered Fritillary, Mourning Cloak and Dark Wood-Nymph. Bring binoculars and cameras.  The instructor will have a net and release permit so a close look can be enjoyed.

The final excursion will cover the “River Otters of Rocky Mountain National Park” on September 12, 2015. River Otters live in the Colorado River and were re-introduced beginning in the 1970’s having been absent from the landscape since the early 1900’s. The region now shows a healthy reproductive population at carrying capacity. This course will be enjoyed at the Trail River Ranch in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Book your room at the Rapids Lodge today and plan a scrumptious dinner overlooking the river after a long day of exploration.

Things to Do in Grand Lake

There is still time to have winter fun in Grand Lake Colorado and the Rapids Lodge and Restaurant is waiting to host you!

Spring is approaching fast and although the snow is beginning to melt downtown, there are still plenty of things to do in Grand Lake. Snowmobile trails will remain good as we had an excellent base to start with and snow at higher elevations has been excellent.

The Grand Lake Nordic Center will stay open through the end of the month as well. Rent your cross country ski equipment and snowshoes or bring your own. You just might bump into a moose somewhere along the groomed trails. For St. Patty’s day take advantage of the Tuesday, March 17 special: St. Patty’s Day Special- Wear green and receive a ½ price trail pass!

Snowshoeing

Show shoeing on Lake Granby

If you have your own gear, cross country skiing along the frozen lake edge of Grand Lake can be very interesting and a great opportunity to look at all the houses, some with great history for example the Hallmark House.

If you aren’t into winter sports but just want to take a scenic walk, try walking along the asphalt road in Rocky Mountain National Park. There isn’t much traffic at this time of the year and your boots will stay clean during these early “mud-season days”. Wildlife, quiet and stunning scenery will keep you entertained. You could bring your bicycle too

Nothing beats a March day when the daytime temperatures are 40-50 degrees, the sun is shining and the “Colorado Blue” sky is glowing. Make a snow angel, enjoy the view of the snowcapped mountains, ice skate for the last time this season or ice fish.

History

If you’re a history buff, we recommend checking out the historic Kauffman House Museum. The Kauffman House Museum was the first hotel in Grand Lake and will be open this coming weekend. Entering the museum is like stepping back in time. While you walk through each of the tiny rooms, you’ll see period dress, furniture, and everyday utensils from the late 1800’s. The historical display of Grand County is fascinating and features the history of Grand County all the way back to when the Utes were attacked on the shores of Grand Lake, and their wives and children who were sent out on rafts to stay safe, capsized and perished in a storm. Since then the lake has been known as, “Spirit Lake.”

June – the month of babies!

This first month of summer offers great opportunities for wild life viewing and birding in Rocky Mountain national Park, the Arapahoe National Forest and surrounds. Our wild animals are found wandering through Grand Lake Village, local subdivisions and all around the Rapids Lodge property.

Nothing beats the sight of twin baby moose suckling or the spotted deer or elk fawn gamboling in a green meadow. Fox kits play outside culverts and baby squirrels and chipmunks are everywhere. Our Cordilleran Flycatcher will be back soon to raise a family just outside the Lodge “after hours guest entrance” where she can be observed at her nest from just a few feet away.

We invite you to come enjoy the Historic Rapids Lodge and Restaurant and the Rocky Mountain National Park in early June before the crowds descend and school holidays are in full swing. Savor the quiet, revel in the spring array of flowers and the fresh greens of majestic mountains painted by spring.
