Why not make a weekend of it and really give her a break. Perhaps schedule a massage in her room, a soak at the hot springs and a mani-pedi in town. Think about a box of homemade chocolates from the local store in town, a bouquet of flowers from The Stalk Market and a book from Cascades of the Rockies to take her to another world. Finish up the weekend with a gift from our Grand Lake Art Gallery, a painting, piece of hand-blown glass or a stunning pottery dish will always remind your Mom of this Mother’s Day forever.

Trail Ridge Road Rocky Mountain National Park

Most importantly, Rocky Mountain National Park’s Trail Ridge Road will be opening for the summer. The road connects busy Estes Park to the quieter Grand Lake West Entrance and is the highest continuous highway in the United States. You will be able follow the route of the historic “Circle Tour” from the early days of RMNP. 2015 is Rocky Mountain National Park’s Centennial Year and the Rapids is celebrating their own Centennial as well. Get ready for magnificent views and towering walls of snow along Trail Ridge Road along its highest sections. These are always great photo opportunities that will have your friends amazed!

Cabins in Grand Lake Hotels

Our three lakes will be open water again and the Aspens Trees will be bursting out in brilliant green leaves. Many of the famous Colorado Wildflowers will be putting on a show! The Kauffman House opens for the season and weekend Bingo starts up in the Grand Lake Pavilion. The Memorial Day Parade is fun for the whole family and is always very entertaining. Hike, bike ride, enjoy the electric go-karts, boat, fish… Grand County offers endless fun!

Do you love the outdoors?

If you love the outdoors, but fear the cold, I have the perfect solution: Trails End Lodge Room at the Historic Rapids Lodge.

This is how your outdoors winter weekend getaway will go in Grand Lake, Colorado:

Arrive in Grand Lake on Friday night. Check in at the Rapids Lodge. You are given your room key for the Trail End room.

Walk up the stairs to the second floor, open the door, and you see this spacious room decorated mountain style. You flop on the bed to relax for a few minutes. You get up, check your hair (you know you will), and walk back downstairs for dinner at the Rapids Restaurant, without leaving the building.

You have a great dinner with your date/wife/husband/partner/friend. You talk to a few other diners, comment on the elk medallions (they are delicious). You order dessert – because you are on VACATION!

Now it’s decision time: to go outside? It’s cold – you know.

Because you are an outdoor person and love fresh, cool air, you do and walk downtown. It’s  totally worth it, you say to your date/wife/husband/partner/friend

You walk into shops and the art galleries. The moon rises and shines brilliantly on Grand Lake, lighting up the town. It’s cold, but you are bundled up; and it’s fun.

You walk back to the lodge and back to your mountain room. You fall asleep exhausted on your queen size bed.

And this is only the first day.

Rapids view

Welcome to The Rapids Lodge and Restaurant

Summer passes by so quickly in the Rockies . Who can believe it is already August! The flowers have been spectacular and this season’s unusually frequent precipitation has encouraged thick carpets of lupines that just keep on blooming. Baby elk are losing their spots and growing fast and the baby moose, often born twins, keep us entertained with their lively antics. July 4th went off with a bang, the wooden boat show was a favorite as always and the Buffalo Barbeque Weekend (see photos on this Facebook Page) on July 16th and 17th was a great success. The river is still running just below peak levels but the Rapids was never flooded! There is new lawn down by the river which creates an inviting, cool oasis on hot afternoons. Patrons have greatly enjoyed their lunches outside with the river rushing past. An old bridge was washed out on the way to Winding River Campground bordering the National Park but the county otherwise suffered little damage. The Kawuneechee Valley flooded heavily and the view from Rainbow Curve was very different looking South over huge tracts of water that left the normal path of the river to the imagination. Pockets of snow still remain along Trail Ridge Road and perhaps this year they will add to the few remaining glaciers! A few storms during July were powerfully gusty and one such storm felled the last of the big Lodgepole Pines in the Grand Lake Town Park, among many healthy trees that were lost. The park is a little more sunny but just as pretty with the new landscaping that was done last fall. The Granby School lost part of its roof and a few other buildings were damaged too! Colorado and much of the country have experienced some unusually strong storms this season.
Lets see what August will bring us…..

Everywhere you look, the Lupines create a fantastic carpet of color.

Grand Lake Regatta

Regatta Week runs from July 30th through August 6th, 2011 and Grand Lake Yacht Club Members come from all over the country to their homes on Grand Lake to participate in this famous race whose tradition began in 1912 when Thomas Lipton, of Lipton Tea, decided to sponsor an annual race by providing “The Lipton Cup” as the prize. Grand Lake is particuarly mesmerising during this week as the sails add color and nail biting interest to the vista. Click here to read about the history of the Grand Lake Yacht Club, one of the world’s highest at 8369 feet above sea level.

History of The Rapids Lodge and Restaurant

The History of the Rapids Lodge and Restaurant includes musicians Jim Croce, Kris Kristofferson and Janis Joplin playing in the restaurant when it was a Honky Tonk bar in the 60;s. The history includes gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and ghost sightings.

In the 1950’s the second floor was a casino and the third floor was a brothel. There even was an emergency buzzer under the front desk so people could be alerted when the police were at the door.
