Trail Ridge Road Rocky Mountain National Park

Most importantly, Rocky Mountain National Park’s Trail Ridge Road will be opening for the summer. The road connects busy Estes Park to the quieter Grand Lake West Entrance and is the highest continuous highway in the United States. You will be able follow the route of the historic “Circle Tour” from the early days of RMNP. 2015 is Rocky Mountain National Park’s Centennial Year and the Rapids is celebrating their own Centennial as well. Get ready for magnificent views and towering walls of snow along Trail Ridge Road along its highest sections. These are always great photo opportunities that will have your friends amazed!

Cabins in Grand Lake Hotels

Our three lakes will be open water again and the Aspens Trees will be bursting out in brilliant green leaves. Many of the famous Colorado Wildflowers will be putting on a show! The Kauffman House opens for the season and weekend Bingo starts up in the Grand Lake Pavilion. The Memorial Day Parade is fun for the whole family and is always very entertaining. Hike, bike ride, enjoy the electric go-karts, boat, fish… Grand County offers endless fun!

History

If you’re a history buff, we recommend checking out the historic Kauffman House Museum. The Kauffman House Museum was the first hotel in Grand Lake and will be open this coming weekend. Entering the museum is like stepping back in time. While you walk through each of the tiny rooms, you’ll see period dress, furniture, and everyday utensils from the late 1800’s. The historical display of Grand County is fascinating and features the history of Grand County all the way back to when the Utes were attacked on the shores of Grand Lake, and their wives and children who were sent out on rafts to stay safe, capsized and perished in a storm. Since then the lake has been known as, “Spirit Lake.”

Now that school holidays are here, the Rapids Lodge and the town of Grand Lake are bustling. There is still availability for rooms so please access our online booking system to see what might be perfect for you. We have had fabulous, sunny weather and ideal conditions for all of the area’s outdoor activities. Try rafting, horse riding, our go-kart track, bowling, fishing, boating, hiking in Rocky Mountain national Park…you certainly won’t get bored! Our pet-friendly accommodations are very popular and folks just love having their pets join them . Visit the Grand Lake Chamber website for a calendar of events.

Grand Lake Moose, Moose and more Moose!

Grand Lake Moose.

Since Moose were re-introduced to North Park in 1978, they have proliferated and are frequently seen throughout the Kawuneechee Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park and the Grand Lake Area. Some are so comfortable that 9 News recently visited Grand Lake to get some footage of a young bull moose who has taken a fancy to a moose statue right here in town!

Fox Kit

Our current common sightings include a moose mother and 2 yearlings and a moose bull, still growing his velvet covered antlers. It seems that recently, I can’t walk into work without seeing Moose, Elk, Mule Deer and even red fox kits. Black Bears have been sighted in Grand Lake too.

Grand Lake has some fun events coming up. Enjoy a afternoon concert in the town park Gazebo, play Bingo (every Friday and Saturday night), shop our Grand Lake Arts and Crafts Fair, sing Karaoke, get ideas from the Art and Architecture Home Tour and be entertained by our famous Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre!

Trail Ridge Road (US 34 through Rocky Mountain National Park) is spectacular right now with huge walls of snow in some sections. All that snow also means that our Tonahutu River is full of rapids and quite something to see. Make a reservation for June and select your perfect room from our range of Grand Lake accommodations:  a River View Condo overlooking the river, a pet-friendly cabin or Rapids Suite, or a romantic Lodge Guest Room. The Rapids Restaurant is open 7 days a week and offers outdoor seating next to the river. The Historic Rapids Lodge is truly a memorable experience!

It’s the middle of May and there is a lot to do in Grand County!

Shadow Mountain Reservoir is free of ice today and Grand Lake and Lake Granby will follow in the next few days. Spring is here and white pelicans already grace Shadow Mountain Reservoir among many other species which are in full breeding plumage. This is a great time for birding in the Rocky Mountains.

Fish are hungry and eager too. Already our lake shores are lined with fisherman. Water is flowing strongly into Lake Granby and outflow percentages will not increase this year so we look forward to rapidly rising water levels in Lake Granby. Shadow Mountain Reservoir and Grand Lake have constant water levels and are always full. Bring your kayak or rent one at Rocky Mountain Outfitters and glide the still morning waters, still undisturbed by power boats.

Trails are soggy but certainly usable and with the recent spring snows at the end of March and beginning of May, snowshoeing and cross country are still possible and you won’t have to go far to reach good snow!

If you want to get your last down hill skiing in, have you thought about planning a trip to stay at the Historic Rapids Lodge and Restaurant on Memorial Day Weekend? Trail Ridge Road will open for the busy holiday weekend and skiing enthusiasts can drive into Rocky Mountain National Park with friends and ski down some of the slopes above tree-line, then be picked up by car below (teamwork)! Check with the Kawuneechee Visitor’s Center regarding conditions and advice.

Grand County, Colorado is an exciting place to visit this early in the season. The weather forecast is excellent for the next 10 days and days will be between 60 and 70 degrees for the majority of the time. Pick a great Rapids’ Condo overlooking the Tonahutu River or curl up in a cozy Lodge Room. Bring your pet too; we have a lot of pet-friendly options.

Grand Lake Colorado April

What is April like in Grand Lake, Colorado?

There are lots of activities as the snow begins to melt! I have already seen fishermen out in the channel between Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Reservoir and the fishing is good! The water in the channel never freezes due to the flow of water created as the Big Thompson Project pumps water through the Adams Tunnel to the East side of the Continental Divide, and the lake ice is receding everyday.

Grand Lake as seen from Point Park on Easter Sunday

Trails in Rocky Mountain National Park are good for snow shoeing and folks are still out there ice-fishing (check the ice conditions first) and snowmobiling (check the Grand Lake Trailgroomer’s website for up to date trail conditions). A good soak under the stars at Hot Sulphur Springs Resort is always a treat. Bird watching is getting more exciting with raptors arriving from the south, and Mountain Bluebirds plus American Robins are a true harbinger of Spring.

Temperatures at night seem to be hovering around 25 degrees and the days can reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If you have never star-gazed on a winter’s night, now is the time. Our skies are devoid of pollution and will bowl you over with their clarity and the myriad stars against the mountain silhouettes!

So what are you waiting for….the perfect room is awaiting you, cozy and peaceful with the great outdoors all around!

What are your plans for Easter…?

Easter Sunday is just 2 weeks away and the Rapids Restaurant offers the perfect spot for you your family and friends to get to together. We will be serving Easter Brunch all day Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8:30am, and the dinner menu starts at 5pm. Soon the winter season will be over so make the most of it and come enjoy our cozy fireplaces overlooking the frozen Tonahutu River and our delicious menu options.

Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park are worth visiting at this time of year. Temperatures are comfortable and some days can be warm enough for T-shirts. Waterbirds are beginning to collect in the open channel between Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Reservoir so if you are a birdwatcher you can definitely check some species off your list. Crossbills and Common Redpolls have been common this winter! Moose are beginning to be active and frequently seen too. Our Grand Lake Lodging offers a great variety of room styles so you can find your perfect room whether it is a Romantic Lodge Guest Room, a Pet-Friendly Rapids Suite or a Condo sleeping up to 8 people!. You can’t beat us for a great Colorado Lodging option!
