Spring run-off – Tonahutu River at the Rapids Lodge

Memorial Day Weekend is next. The ice on the three lakes will have melted off and the Aspen trees will be painting the hillsides a glowing spring green. This weekend still offers quiet and solitude if you choose, as the crowds have not yet descended on the town of Grand Lake. Start your summer fun with a bang and rent a condo on the roaring Tonahutu River, fully swollen with spring run-off. This is a sight to see!

Summers in Grand Lake and the Rocky Mountains are spectacular. Escape the heat! Days are in the 70’s and nights are cool. The Rocky Mountain wildflowers are astonishing in their variety and in the thick fields of color they lay across the landscape. With water-sports, boat rentals, sailing, water-skiing, horse-riding, hiking, touring by car, wildlife viewing, bird-watching and so much more….this is surely the place to be.

The Rapids Lodge has the most variety in Grand Lake Lodging options: Lodge Guest Rooms for two, pet-friendly cabins and suites sleeping up to 6 people, and condominiums that sleep up to 8 people.

We hope to contribute to making your summer vacation in Colorado a truly memorable trip!

Welcome to The Rapids Lodge and Restaurant

Summer passes by so quickly in the Rockies . Who can believe it is already August! The flowers have been spectacular and this season’s unusually frequent precipitation has encouraged thick carpets of lupines that just keep on blooming. Baby elk are losing their spots and growing fast and the baby moose, often born twins, keep us entertained with their lively antics. July 4th went off with a bang, the wooden boat show was a favorite as always and the Buffalo Barbeque Weekend (see photos on this Facebook Page) on July 16th and 17th was a great success. The river is still running just below peak levels but the Rapids was never flooded! There is new lawn down by the river which creates an inviting, cool oasis on hot afternoons. Patrons have greatly enjoyed their lunches outside with the river rushing past. An old bridge was washed out on the way to Winding River Campground bordering the National Park but the county otherwise suffered little damage. The Kawuneechee Valley flooded heavily and the view from Rainbow Curve was very different looking South over huge tracts of water that left the normal path of the river to the imagination. Pockets of snow still remain along Trail Ridge Road and perhaps this year they will add to the few remaining glaciers! A few storms during July were powerfully gusty and one such storm felled the last of the big Lodgepole Pines in the Grand Lake Town Park, among many healthy trees that were lost. The park is a little more sunny but just as pretty with the new landscaping that was done last fall. The Granby School lost part of its roof and a few other buildings were damaged too! Colorado and much of the country have experienced some unusually strong storms this season.
Lets see what August will bring us…..
