Getaway ideas for Grand Lake Colorado

October Getaway Ideas ….

So the fall colors are at their tail end but the elk are still bugling away in Rocky Mountain National Park. What a great time of year to see the grand bull elk round up there harems and defend them. The elk herds appear out of the trees every day like clockwork at dusk and you are guaranteed a sighting! If you are an early riser, you can watch them head back into the trees after a night in the meadow.

The scenery in Grand Lake, Colorado is always breathtaking no matter what time of year, the mountain scenery and the sparkling lakes always astound. October is a great time to visit for those who like to avoid the crowds. The Rapids Lodge begins offering low season rates at the beginning of the month: stay for as low as $60 for 2 people and $89 for up to 6 people.  Some of these are pet-friendly so the whole family can come along!

There is still plenty to do besides shopping and dining out in Grand Lake (The Rapids Restaurant will be serving dinner during October, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday). Fishing, hiking, hot air ballooning  and biking can still be enjoyable as any random snowfall is not likely to stick until November. If it does get a little cool, soak in Hot Sulphur Springs or snuggle up in front of one of our fireplaces. Beware that if a substantial snowfall occurs at higher elevations, Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park may close, even if temporarily. Permanent closure usually happens when plowing the road becomes too difficult but can be late into October. Access to Grand Lake from Granby is year round.

The Arapahoe National Forest offers great hunting and if you are not the camping type, access is very quick and easy from the Rapids Lodge.  The Rapids has some larger condominiums  which can accommodate larger hunting groups if you are visiting Grand County with friends.

Think about a box of homemade chocolates from the local store in town, a bouquet of flowers from The Stalk Market and a book from Cascades of the Rockies to take her to another world. June – the month of babies!

This first month of summer offers great opportunities for wild life viewing and birding in Rocky Mountain national Park, the Arapahoe National Forest and surrounds. Our wild animals are found wandering through Grand Lake Village, local subdivisions and all around the Rapids Lodge property.

Nothing beats the sight of twin baby moose suckling or the spotted deer or elk fawn gamboling in a green meadow. Fox kits play outside culverts and baby squirrels and chipmunks are everywhere. Our Cordilleran Flycatcher will be back soon to raise a family just outside the Lodge “after hours guest entrance” where she can be observed at her nest from just a few feet away.

We invite you to come enjoy the Historic Rapids Lodge and Restaurant and the Rocky Mountain National Park in early June before the crowds descend and school holidays are in full swing. Savor the quiet, revel in the spring array of flowers and the fresh greens of majestic mountains painted by spring.

Do you love the outdoors?

If you love the outdoors, but fear the cold, I have the perfect solution: Trails End Lodge Room at the Historic Rapids Lodge.

This is how your outdoors winter weekend getaway will go in Grand Lake, Colorado:

Arrive in Grand Lake on Friday night. Check in at the Rapids Lodge. You are given your room key for the Trail End room.

Walk up the stairs to the second floor, open the door, and you see this spacious room decorated mountain style. You flop on the bed to relax for a few minutes. You get up, check your hair (you know you will), and walk back downstairs for dinner at the Rapids Restaurant, without leaving the building.

You have a great dinner with your date/wife/husband/partner/friend. You talk to a few other diners, comment on the elk medallions (they are delicious). You order dessert – because you are on VACATION!

Now it’s decision time: to go outside? It’s cold – you know.

Because you are an outdoor person and love fresh, cool air, you do and walk downtown. It’s  totally worth it, you say to your date/wife/husband/partner/friend

You walk into shops and the art galleries. The moon rises and shines brilliantly on Grand Lake, lighting up the town. It’s cold, but you are bundled up; and it’s fun.

You walk back to the lodge and back to your mountain room. You fall asleep exhausted on your queen size bed.

And this is only the first day.
