Grand County, Colorado has experienced unusual weather this year! January brought endless snow, and nobody had anywhere to put it after shoveling driveways and clearing roads! Then we hardly had any snow for a couple of months. This was all followed up by a snowy April and snowy/wet May. Trail Ridge Road didn’t even manage to open in time for Memorial Day Weekend, and that was not for lack of trying; it just kept snowing at high elevations! June is usually unpredictable weather wise. It can be sunny, snowy, rainy, and most often, all of those in one day! Late June this year was dry, sunny and unseasonably warm. Then the monsoons came in July, and it was more cloudy than usual with longer afternoon sessions of rain, often beginning around noon into the evening. It did this all through August too! August usually brings us quick showers in the afternoons but is generally drier with hot days. The Aspen Trees started turning yellow in spots in late August and although the change sometimes “goes on hold”, this year they have just kept on changing, and it looks like an early peak color in the middle of the month instead of late in September.
Considering all the fires in the North West of the country, we are very grateful for all the moisture and no backyard forest fires! The lakes are all still full as well, including Lake Granby! Full lakes are scenic and are great to be out on in the fall weather. Come fishing and boating in Grand County, Colorado!
What will October, November, and December bring? Will it be an early winter or will we have a warm and sunny October? Will the lakes freeze in early or late December? We look forward to finding out. The elk are usually bugling in Rocky Mountain National Park at the West Entrance through early October. The bull elk, moose and mule deer are all sporting impressive racks at this time of the year. We invite you to visit us a go bird and wildlife watching, hiking and sightseeing. There are excellent hunting opportunities in the Arapaho National Forest. Soak the day away at Hot Sulphur Springs in the outdoor pools under an open sky! Grand Lake, Colorado is a great place to visit in October – the crowds are gone, the shops and restaurants are waiting to welcome you and there are some great sales!

Weather in the Rocky Mountains has been highly variable this September! From beautiful “Indian Summer” days, sporadic light rains, cloudy days, sunny days, a dusting of snow on the highest peaks here and there, we’ve had a little of everything, and WOW has it been beautiful! – As they say, “if you don’t like the weather in Colorado, wait five minutes.”
It seems like peak fall colors in Grand County may occur next weekend, September 25th and 26th and remain good through the end of the first weekend in October which would be wonderful for Grand Lake visitors and locals alike! There are not as many reds as last year but the golds are spectacular and absolutely glow in the sunlight! Even if the weather forecast shows cloudy, don’t be fooled, there are always patches of sun to highlight the magnificent fall colors!
The elk are bugling in Rocky Mountain National Park and can be seen in the meadows in the early mornings and at dusk every day! It is such fun to watch the bulls herding their females and keeping a close eye on them. If a competitor comes close, they are soon challenged and fights can be witnessed as the bulls vie for dominance. Bull moose can also be seen following their females around very closely. It is that time of year!
Lodging in Grand Lake is easy to find this time of year! We’ve got wonderful river side cabins, condos, and rooms tucked neatly in the stunning aspens and pines, some that are even pet-friendly! Our neighbors include a variety of fox, moose, deer, and the occasional elk. If you’re looking for lodging in the heart of Grand Lake, Colorado with scenic views and abundant wildlife, stay with us at the Historic Rapids Lodge and Restaurant.
Grand County experienced a frost August 18th and 19th this summer! That is a sure way to get things turning to reds and yellows. August has not provided much rain either, so a few bushes and trees here and there are showing gold colors already. Predicting when the colors will turn is difficult, perhaps as early as Labor Day Weekend, perhaps as late as the second week of September. Peak colors are often experience during the third week of September. We will see how this Fall in Colorado turns out.
No matter what, Fall in Colorado is a fabulous time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park and Grand Lake, Colorado! Both the Rocky Mountain National Park and the Historic Rapids Lodge are finishing up celebrating their Centennial Year! At 100 years old, this building is a must see. The blockish, “barky” covered building hides a real treasure inside. The Rapids Restaurant offers a cozy ambience with fascinating details in décor, two fireplaces and a wonderful view over the river.
Fall in Colorado offers crisp mornings, brilliant blue skies and vibrant color everywhere you look. Migratory birds and waterfowl begin passing through Grand County on their way south for the winter, and the area offers good opportunities for excellent Colorado birding. Watch bull Moose in rut and bull Elk herding their harems of females and “bugling” in the meadows of the Rocky Mountain National Park. An evening enjoying the elk is perfectly followed by a dinner at the Rapids Restaurant next to the fireplace! Taking a day drive anywhere in Colorado is bound to amaze in the fall. Hot Sulphur Springs is a great place to relax in steaming starlit pools after a long day of hiking and mountain adventure.
The Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre will be presenting their fall show “Forever Plaid” through September. Check their website for show days and times. Grand Lake also celebrates “Constitution Week” (Sept. 14-19) which offers all sorts of interesting talks and even a fun fireworks show on Saturday the 19th.
No matter when you visit during the fall, there is plenty to do, some of the best weather, busy weekends or quiet weekdays and endless opportunities to make memories!
