Experience Winter in Rocky Mountain National Park ….

February is proving to be a very snowy month! The Kawuneechee Valley on the West side of Rocky Mountain National Park is an excellent place to visit in winter. The meadows offer great views of some of the park’s massive peaks like Bowen and Baker. Fresh snow affords an excellent opportunity to look for fresh animal tracks in the snow. You never know what you might find …. perhaps a trail showing the nocturnal wanderings of a stealthy mountain lion. Moose and deer tracks are easy to find along with coyotes and foxes. The latter two can often be seen creeping around in the snow covered meadows only to stop and listen with ears pointed downwards, followed by a pounce deep into the snow. Voles scuttle around in tunnels well under the snow and are a tasty meal. Porcupines are also active in winter and spend much of their time in trees feeding on the bark. Look up next time you are walking around.

Steller’s Jays, Clark’s nutcrackers, Magpies, Chickadees, Pine Siskins, Crows and Ravens are all common at this time of year. You may be lucky enough to see the Pine Grosbeaks or Crossbills. Both these species are dimorphous as males are red and females are yellow. Winter birding and wildlife watching can be very rewarding.

The best way to experience the park at this time of the year is snowshoeing or cross country skiing. Equipment rentals are available in town and there are plenty of trails for all skill levels. The Harbison Loop is excellent for beginners. There are also free guided trails every weekend. A ranger will offer you some insight into the ecology of the park.

The Rapids Lodge is in a perfect location. You can even access both the Tonahutu Trail and the North Inlet Trail right from you room. Book your reservation today, build up an appetite outdoors and finish up with a sumptuous dinner in the Rapids Restaurant.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Rocky Mountain Warriors Poker Run on February 22, 2014 (Time: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM). This snowmobile poker run serves to raise funds for the Rocky Mountain Warriors in order to bring Veterans to Grand Lake for outdoor recreational therapy.  Door prizes, silent auction, food and fun!

News from the Rapids Lodge…

Our beloved Georgie girl, Rapids Lodge owner Tom Ludwig’s White German Shepherd, passed away on January 28th. Georgie Girl was born on George Washington’s birthday in 1998 and never left Tom’s side. She was beautiful, had a sweet nature and was perfectly well behaved in our busy Lodge and Restaurant setting. Georgie Girl has greeted thousands of guests over the years and was a fixture on the porch and at the front desk. She will be sorely missed and always remembered.
